LED light therapy is actually a NASA technology that was adopted by the skincare community when its ability to heal wounds and tame inflammation was noticed. Blue light frequencies are typically used to treat acne, while red light is used for skin rejuvenation. In short, light therapy is a treatment which has been around for about 30 years. It’s the process of exposing skin to red, blue, green, cyan, yellow, orange/amber, purple, white, and near-infrared LED light which each have various skincare benefits.
Where it came from
LED light therapy is a NASA technology that was adopted by the skincare community when its ability to heal wounds and tame inflammation was noticed. It has been used in skin treatment for around 30 years, which makes it one of the better-established modalities in the industry rather than a recent arrival.
What each colour does
Different wavelengths reach different depths and do different things. The main ones we use:
- Red: the skin rejuvenation wavelength, used to support collagen and reduce the look of fine lines
- Blue: targets acne
- Yellow and amber: used for redness and sensitivity
- Near-infrared: the deepest reaching, used alongside red for repair
- Green, cyan, purple and white: each carry their own skincare benefits and are selected to suit the concern
What a session feels like
Nothing touches your skin and nothing is heated to the point of discomfort. You lie under the light with eye protection for the duration of the session. There’s no sensation to speak of and no recovery afterwards, so it’s genuinely a treatment you can have and then go back to your day.
On its own or added to a facial
LED works well as a standalone course, particularly for acne, where consistency matters more than intensity. It also finishes a facial well, because the skin has just been cleansed and exfoliated and the light reaches it unobstructed. Our $299 HIFU package includes an LED session for the same reason.
How many sessions
LED is cumulative. A single session is pleasant but a course is what produces change, particularly for acne and inflammation. We’ll set a realistic schedule at your consultation rather than selling you a package before we have seen your skin.
Common questions
Which light colour do I need?
Blue light frequencies are typically used to treat acne, while red light is used for skin rejuvenation. Your therapist selects the wavelength based on what we’re treating on the day.
Does LED light therapy hurt?
No. Nothing touches the skin and there’s no heat to speak of. You wear eye protection and lie under the light for the session.
Is there any downtime?
None. You can apply make-up and return to normal activity straight after.
