The idea behind it
Skin needling creates a large number of very small, controlled injuries in the skin. Each one is far too small to leave a mark, but collectively they trigger the body’s wound-healing response: inflammation, then proliferation, then remodelling, which is where new collagen and elastin are laid down.
The treatment doesn’t add anything to your skin. It prompts your skin to rebuild itself, which is why results appear over weeks rather than immediately, and why a course outperforms a single session.
What it treats
- Acne scarring, particularly rolling and boxcar scars
- Active acne
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Pigmentation and uneven tone
- Sun damaged skin
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Stretch marks
- General texture and firmness
The two approaches
Traditional needling
A motorised pen with a sterile needle cartridge passes over the skin, creating micro-channels at a set depth. Depth is adjusted by area and by concern, since scarring needs to be reached deeper than general texture work.
Bio microneedling
Bio microneedling is a revolutionary patented skincare treatment. This procedure utilises nano particles from sponges that penetrate deeply to stimulate collagen production and enhance skin texture. There’s no needling device and no cartridge, but the regenerative response it triggers is the same.
This is the approach we use at e-skin, in the form of bio microneedling. It behaves differently in recovery: instead of the redness pattern of a needling pen, it produces a distinct shedding phase over the following few days.
What a session involves
Your skin is cleansed and assessed, the treatment is applied across the area, and a suitable serum and protective barrier follow. Session length depends on the area and the concern being addressed.
Recovery
With traditional needling, expect redness resembling mild sunburn for roughly 24 to 48 hours, sometimes with mild swelling on day one.
With bio microneedling, expect dryness and tightness for roughly 3 to 5 days, moving into visible flaking as the surface layer clears. This is the treatment working rather than a complication, but it’s worth planning your week around.
When results appear
Collagen remodelling is slow. Skin usually looks its best from around 2 weeks after a session, and continues improving as the course progresses. Anyone promising a dramatic same-week transformation is describing swelling and hydration, not new collagen.
How it compares to HIFU
These two treatments are often presented as alternatives, but they work at different depths on different problems. Skin needling addresses the surface and upper layers: texture, scarring, pigment and pore appearance. HIFU works at the foundational layer to lift and tighten.
If your concern is a crepey, uneven or scarred surface, needling is the relevant treatment. If it’s slackness along the jaw or under the chin, it’s HIFU. Many clients eventually run both, in sequence rather than simultaneously.
Who shouldn’t have it
Needling isn’t appropriate over active infection, certain skin conditions, or for people on some medications. It’s also generally deferred during pregnancy. This isn’t an exhaustive list, and it’s exactly what a consultation exists to work through.
Common questions
What does skin needling actually do?
It creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the body’s wound-healing response, which lays down new collagen and elastin. The skin rebuilds itself rather than having anything added to it.
Is bio microneedling the same as skin needling?
It produces a similar regenerative response by a different mechanism. Bio microneedling uses nano particles from sponges rather than a motorised needling pen.
How long until I see results from skin needling?
Skin typically looks its best from around 2 weeks after a session, and improves further across a course, because collagen remodelling takes time.
