LED light therapy session at e-skin

Where it came from

LED light therapy is actually a NASA technology that was adopted by the skincare community when its ability to heal wounds and tame inflammation was noticed. Light therapy has been around for about 30 years, which makes it one of the longer-established treatments in the industry rather than a recent trend.

How it works

It’s the process of exposing skin to red, blue, green, cyan, yellow, orange or amber, purple, white and near-infrared LED light, each of which carries various skincare benefits.

Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths and are absorbed by different structures in the skin. That’s why colour selection is the whole treatment decision: the wavelength determines what you’re actually treating.

What each colour is used for

Red

The skin rejuvenation wavelength. Red light is used to support the skin’s repair processes and the appearance of fine lines.

Blue

Blue light frequencies are typically used to treat acne. It’s the most commonly requested colour by younger clients and the one where a consistent course matters most.

Near-infrared

The deepest-reaching wavelength, generally used alongside red rather than on its own.

Yellow, amber, green and the rest

Yellow and amber are commonly used for redness and sensitivity. Green, cyan, purple and white each carry their own benefits and are selected to match the concern.

What a session is like

Nothing touches your skin. You lie under the light panel or mask with eye protection for the duration of the session. There’s no meaningful heat and no sensation to describe, which is unusual for a skin treatment and is exactly why it’s so often added to the end of a facial.

Downtime

None at all. You can apply make-up immediately and go straight back to work. It’s one of the very few skin treatments where that’s genuinely true rather than a marketing line.

How many sessions you need

LED is cumulative, which is the most important thing to understand before booking. A course is what produces the change, particularly for acne and inflammation, where consistency matters more than intensity. Judge it across the course rather than after the first visit.

We set the number of sessions after we have looked at your skin, so you buy the course that suits it.

On its own or with a facial

LED works well as a standalone course and also finishes a facial well, because the skin has just been cleansed and exfoliated and the light reaches it unobstructed. Our $299 HIFU package includes an LED session alongside full face and neck HIFU and a facial for that reason.

Common questions

Does LED light therapy actually work?

It’s an established modality that has been used in skin treatment for around 30 years, originating as a NASA technology noted for wound healing and reducing inflammation. It works cumulatively, so a course produces change where a single session generally won’t.

What is the difference between red and blue LED light?

Blue light frequencies are typically used to treat acne, while red light is used for skin rejuvenation.

Is there any downtime after LED light therapy?

None. You can apply make-up and return to normal activity straight away.
