The principle
Your skin has just been asked to repair itself. Everything in the days that follow should either help that repair or stay out of its way. Nothing you apply needs to be clever; it needs to be gentle, and it needs to be consistent.
The first 24 hours
- No make-up on the treated area
- No exercise, sauna, steam or anything that raises skin temperature and flushes the face
- No swimming, in a pool or the ocean
- Cleanse with lukewarm water and clean hands only
- Sleep on a fresh pillowcase
Days 2 to 5
With traditional needling, redness fades over this window. With bio microneedling, this is when dryness moves into shedding.
- Keep the routine simple: gentle cleanser, the serum you were given, a barrier moisturiser
- Nothing active. No retinol, no AHAs or BHAs, no vitamin C, no scrubs, no exfoliating devices
- Let flaking come away on its own. Don’t pick, peel or scrub it off
- Sunscreen every day, and stay out of direct sun where you can
The one thing that matters most
Letting the flaking lift on its own is what keeps the new skin underneath intact, and it’s the single biggest thing you control in the result. Skin left alone settles faster and more evenly.
If it’s bothering you, add moisturiser rather than fingernails.
Week 2 onwards
Once shedding is complete and the skin no longer feels sensitised, actives can generally be reintroduced one at a time rather than all at once. Your therapist will tell you when, based on how your skin responded.
When to call the clinic
- Redness that’s worsening rather than settling after several days
- Increasing pain rather than decreasing
- Any sign of infection, such as heat, pus or spreading swelling
- Anything that simply doesn’t feel like it’s going the way it was described
Call rather than wait. e-skin clients can reach us on 0413 822 633 during clinic hours, and we would far rather look at something early.
Common questions
When can I wear make-up after skin needling?
Avoid make-up on the treated area for the first 24 hours. After that, follow the specific guidance your therapist gave you, which depends on how your skin responded.
Should I peel the flaking skin off?
No. Let it come away on its own. Pulling it early lifts skin that’s still attached and is the most common cause of prolonged redness and uneven tone.
When can I use retinol again?
Once shedding is complete and the skin is no longer sensitised, and then one active at a time. Your therapist will give you a timeframe based on your treatment.
